Matt Thurber

Matt Thurber

Matt Thurber says he has the best job in the world, reporting on aviation for BJT and our sister publication, Aviation International News. In addition to working as an aircraft mechanic on everything from Piper Cubs to turboprops, Matt has been a pilot for an aircraft-owner/executive and a flight instructor. He has hunted swordfish near the George's Banks off the East Coast from a single-engine Piper Supercub. As BJT's South California staffer, Matt enjoys excellent year-round flying weather, proximity to the Marina del Rey rental sailing fleet and a short drive to the mountains for winter snowboarding. In 2010, he succumbed to the siren call of Hollywood and wrote his first screenplay.

“When you get into the larger aircraft it becomes like a hotel, with dozens of staff supporting the plane based in a galley area down below. You have very comprehensive cooking facilities, and on larger aircraft we have looked at theatres, with spiral staircases and a Steinway grand piano. The limitations for what you can put inside a plane are pretty much the limits of physics, and even money cannot always overcome that. Even so, people are still always trying to push [the limits]. ”
