Barbecue at Its Best

Restaurants such as Arthur Bryant’s and Gates Bar-B-Q are arguably better known among Kansas City barbecue fans, but relative newcomer Oklahoma Joe’s is nonetheless a standout. [It made our “best American barbecues” list in our Book of Lists.] Here in barbecue heaven (nearly a hundred metro-area joints feature BBQ) and housed in a converted gas station, Oklahoma Joe’s attracts knowledgeable and adoring crowds.

Kansas City barbecue is a delicious mixture of styles imported from Texas, Memphis, the Carolinas and other parts of the country. Not for the calorically challenged, Oklahoma Joe’s offers up outstanding beef brisket, succulent pulled-pork sandwiches and expertly prepared pork ribs, among other items. Sides include spicy dirty rice, red beans and rice, cole slaw and, of course, hearty fries.

The meat, especially the brisket, is what people want most. “It’s not just the sauce that makes it great,” said general manager Doug Worgul. “It’s the wood, the quality of the meat, the technique and the rub.” Dining at this humble spot on the Kansas side of the state line is a must for barbecue fans, and you will certainly not leave hungry. Lines outside can be long, but you won’t regret the wait.
