Bucolic retreats like this in the middle of a major urban setting are usually reserved for parks or botanical gardens.

The biggest dilemma guests face at the Resort at Pelican Hill is making sure they don't get diverted from golf. With 36 holes designed by Tom Fazio, there's enough there along the Pacific Ocean 45 miles south of downtown Los Angeles to hold the interest of the most discerning golf traveler.

IT'S TOO COLD UP HERE to be a hotbed of golf. But Northland Country Club, on the western shore of Lake Superior, 150 miles above Minneapolis-St. Paul, is a gateway to the fabulous recreation area of the state's Boundary Waters region. Outdoor sports abound-not just hunting, fishing and boating, but also golf, at least during the five-month respite from winter.

Of the nearly 300 design projects undertaken by Arnold Palmer and his longtime associate, Ed Seay, Old Tabby Links stands out as the most compelling. Opened in 1994 in Spring Island, S.C., it ranks No. 96 on Golfweek's list of the best modern courses.

Gozzer Ranch's setting is impressive enough-looking out onto the 60-square-mile Lake Coeur d'Alene in northern Idaho. More stunning is how the property's developers, Discovery Land Co., have kept the whole place rustic and in low profile. The 700-acre land plan includes a Tom Fazio-designed golf course that snuggles easily into the native contours.

“"I've got a list of corporations that have gotten out of their airplanes [because of criticism from politicians]. It is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. When you look at the time and cost savings; it does not make sense not to fly [privately]. You can't let public perception interfere with your business decision to fly. It either is a good business decision or it isn't."”
