"Something has taken place at Bayreuth which our grandchildren and their children will still remember," wrote composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky after attending the first performances of Wagnerian operas at the playhouse there.

Here's a golf course that looks like a prehistoric rock garden. Luckily, it plays like a something out of Eden. Between the stark, boulder-strewn Santa Catalina Mountains looming on the east and the Tortolita Mountains to the north, you half expect to see dinosaurs roaming just around the doglegs here.

A quarter mile from the Estancia del Zorro-the ranch of the fox-flows a stream my friend Brian O'Keefe calls the best spring creek he has ever fished. This is saying something. O'Keefe, who lives in the Oregon high desert, has made an enviable life of searching the world for great fishing.

We had just sat down in cozy alpine hut No. 6 on the snowy, remote slopes of Lech, Austria, when our private ski instructor, Max Weissengruber, ordered a round of peach schnapps-which he insisted was de rigueur at 11 a.m. "Life is not only about maximum profit," he said with his signature Austrian dogmatism. "It's about quality."

A neighbor of mine counts a late-model six-speed Corvette coupe among his household's half dozen cars and nine motorcycles. When I remarked to him that the Shelby GT500 seemed to be attracting more come-hither glances from women than the Z06, he didn't miss a beat: "You been cruising around trailer parks?" The loyalty these cars generate is as fierce now as it was back in the good old days.

Wild populations have created what many well-traveled fly fishers believe are the finest river trout fisheries in the world today. These trout are large. They are beautiful. They are also some of the most difficult to catch.

One of the premier events for car aficionados, the Palm Beach [Fla.] Cavallino Classic, takes place January 22 to 27 at the Breakers Hotel in that city. Ferrari owners will find much to see and do, including a track meet; a touring rally with vintage and classic Ferraris; and-the high point of the show-the Concorso d'Eleganza, which will feature more than 100 classic cars.

Our series on America's best golf courses continues with a look at three of the best classic fairways in the north central U.S., as determined by Golfweek magazine's handpicked panel of 450 course raters. The raters, who are students of architecture, attend national workshops and each evaluate 15 to 20 courses per year.
