We had just sat down in cozy alpine hut No. 6 on the snowy, remote slopes of Lech, Austria, when our private ski instructor, Max Weissengruber, ordered a round of peach schnapps-which he insisted was de rigueur at 11 a.m. "Life is not only about maximum profit," he said with his signature Austrian dogmatism. "It's about quality."

The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and the Ford Shelby GT500 Cobra
A neighbor of mine counts a late-model six-speed Corvette coupe among his household's half dozen cars and nine motorcycles. When I remarked to him that the Shelby GT500 seemed to be attracting more come-hither glances from women than the Z06, he didn't miss a beat: "You been cruising around trailer parks?" The loyalty these cars generate is as fierce now as it was back in the good old days.

European brown trout, introduced to the crystalline waters of New Zealand in 1868, have thrived in this country, which is roughly the size of California. Wild populations have created what many well-traveled fly fishers believe are the finest river trout fisheries in the world today. These trout are large. They are beautiful. They are also some of the most difficult to catch.

With the LS600hL, Lexus has given the hybrid propulsion system popularized by the Toyota Prius some serious muscle and cloaked it in luxury robes. The "h" stands for the hybrid V8/electric motor powerplant that drives all four wheels and the "L" is for long wheelbase, which describes the expansive but not quite Maybachian rear passenger area.

Three thousand kilometers from tidewater, a porpoise surfaces. Then a foot-long skinny slasher of a fish grabs the streamer fly you strip through water the color of Lapsong tea and shreds it. Sweat runs down your nose. The February sun blazes.

“When you get into the larger aircraft it becomes like a hotel, with dozens of staff supporting the plane based in a galley area down below. You have very comprehensive cooking facilities, and on larger aircraft we have looked at theatres, with spiral staircases and a Steinway grand piano. The limitations for what you can put inside a plane are pretty much the limits of physics, and even money cannot always overcome that. Even so, people are still always trying to push [the limits]. ”
