“[New billionaires in fast-growing countries] have to buy longer-range airplanes. If you’re flying from Mongolia to Nigeria, it’s either a three-day journey flying commercial or a nine-hour flight on your jet.”
The Best of Burgundy
Burgundy is known for magnificent vineyards, hotels and dining, and you can enjoy all three at Relais & Chateau Bernard Loiseau, a five-diamond hotel with a three-star Michelin restaurant. Located in Saulier, less than an hour from everything in Burgundy, this property offers the perfect respite after a day of wine tasting.
The Restaurant Bernard Loiseau oozes excellence, and the friendly, polished waiters make you feel right at home. Try the Jerusalem artichoke soup or the stellar foie gras with candied fig nectar. Classic entrees include roasted Saint-Pierre (John Dory) with laurel, baby chards and chanterelle mushrooms; and sweetbreads with lemongrass and young vegetables. The sweetbreads are incredible–best I’ve ever had.
Desserts are as enjoyable as the main event. Among them: a gorgeous pear and apple tarte with chocolate, lemon and rhubarb puree, and the delicate Noisettissime–lovely little caramel pralines.
The wine list is predictably impressive, and Bernard Loiseau offers customers 70 wines by the glass, which would be unheard of in any comparable restaurant. “We try to present the best and most typical wine of each small village, like Meursalt,” said general manager Pascal Abernate. Bernard Loiseau epitomizes Burgundy. Put it on your “must” list when you plan a visit to the region.–Bob Ecker
