Baldwin Aviation

This consulting firm seeks to provide small flight departments with the level of safety resources available to their larger counterparts.

What It Is: A consulting firm specializing in safety and quality-management systems for air charter operators, small corporate flight departments, and other aviation entities.

How It Grew: Current president Donald E. Baldwin formed the company in 2004 based on his experience managing large global flight departments. He led the development of scalable safety management system (SMS) software to provide small flight departments with the level of safety resources available to their larger counterparts.

Adding a team of credentialed aviation safety experts and working within the guidelines of the International Standards for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO), Baldwin became the only IS-BAO-registered SMS implementer (at the time) in 2007 and achieved various stages of accreditation over the next several years, reaching the pinnacle—Stage III audit capability—in 2013.

As aviation regulatory entities pass and update requirements for structured SMS programs to be implemented for various commercial operations, Baldwin’s safety programs and products continue to grow in number and scope. Baldwin Aviation Safety and Compliance is one of only 19 IS-BAO-recognized affiliates in the world.

What It Offers: BaldwinSMS programs for commercial and noncommercial aviation departments provide resources needed to develop, implement, and monitor an SMS, including customized forms, SMS basic training, real-time reporting, data collection, and audit assistance. The company’s SMSTransport program provides additional customization focused on helicopter air medical transport operators.

Tools such as Baldwin’s SavvyDoc Manual Management Software, StatusBoard training tracker, Safety Performance Monitoring program, and ER Alert communications system allow clients to use and update their SMS as part of an active safety culture. Operators looking for SMS accreditation can use Baldwin’s IS-BAO/IS-BAH (“Handling” for ground crews) Simplementation program to become IS-BAO/IS-BAH registered within eight to 12 weeks.

The company also offers safety and quality-related workshops for pilots, safety officers, ground crews, and other flight department personnel at conferences and other locations, including at corporate venues.

Recent News: Baldwin Safety and Compliance recently teamed with the Emil Buehler Aviation Institute of Broward College in Pembroke Pines, Florida, to present a series of aviation safety training courses. In February, the collaboration will offer “SMS from the Top Down” and “Human Factors for Business Aviation Operations” in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
