Russian Oligarchs No Longer Allowed to Fly Private Jets Over Europe

In response to the Ukraine invasion, the EU has closed its airspace to any airplane controlled by a Russian person or company.

In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the European Union has closed its airspace to all Russian aircraft. The measures, which EU president Ursula von der Leyen announced in a written statement, “apply to any plane owned, chartered, or otherwise controlled by a Russian legal or natural person…[which] includes the private jets of oligarchs,” regardless of where these aircraft are registered.

According to the European Business Aviation Association (EBAA), this move makes air travel “no longer possible” between Russia and the EU. “At this point in time, EBAA is calling on members to be very cautious when planning their flight operations,” it added. “Given the rapidly developing situation regarding the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, EBAA recommends operators stay in regular contact with their national authority and insurance brokers to ensure their operations are carried out safely and in accordance with the regulations in effect.”

EBAA said it continues to monitor the situation and will provide members with accurate updates to any changes in aviation regulations resulting from the conflict.
